Sometimes I get tired of color photographs. Many photographs don’t even seem real anymore. Magazines photos are all over done; skin is flawless and the colors are all over saturated. We may wonder how anything can look so good and perfect. Welcome to the world of Photoshop where reality is relative.
There was a time when I only used black and white film. It’s not that I didn’t like color it was that I wanted to learn how to produce good images without the distraction of color. I saw great images in black and white and I wanted to be able to create prints like them. I learned the zone system of exposure, tested film to find exactly what speed and latitude it had, and tried different film/exposure/development combinations. And then there was printing the negatives I created.
I spent too much time in the college darkroom but that was the extent of my social life at the time.
It wasn’t until I recently upgraded my Photoshop to a newer version that I rediscovered black and white photography. When I opened the black and white conversion dialogue window all the excitement of black and white came back to me.
Unless you've spent time in the darkroom you have no idea what a blessing Photoshop is to photographers who processed and printed film with chemistry.
