A couple months ago I stopped in to the local bookstore and the owner, Gary, asked me to do an article on photographing animals. He was having a particularly hard time getting his cat to co-operate for one of his ad shots.
Now there is something to be said about shooting trained animals that can sit when asked, look attentive when needed, and just be cute on queue. I can’t get my dogs to even come to me when I want them to much less pay attention to me when there are other dogs or people around.
There are so many distractions. Cats, in general, may decide it’s not really worth their time to even consider having their picture taken. Certainly they have better things to do, like sleep.
Know your Subject...
It should be easier to photograph your own pet or child because you have a better understanding of their attitudes, moods, and when it's a good time to get a good portrait, like after a nap. It still may be hit or miss and luck pays a large part in getting a good, sharp, portrait.
It’s a good idea to just go for volume and hope for the best. Once the pictures are downloaded onto the computer remember the most important editing software....
